Built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century, Hagia Sophia is now a museum. This religious center was a constant presence in both Christian and Islamic cultures, hence the many legends and rarities associated with it. The "Column of Wishes" or "Weeping Column", is a product of the famous Ephesus culture, and is the undisputed medic of the Hagia. The legend says that Hagia Sophia’s Wishing Column can magically cure all ailments, of any patient.
The first evidence of its healing power means also the beginning of superstition and mentions the emperor Justinian. Reportedly, he would have inclined his forehead to the cold column to stop the excruciating headache. Another legend justifies the moisture around the column from the tears of the Virgin Mary, while the weeping myth refers to the column’s compassion for a sultan’s trouble, which resulted in the teardrops.
The superstition persists up to the point that, besides healing, it has turned into a wishing column. All you need to do is insert a finger into a hole and rotate it inside. If the finger gets wet upon withdrawal, then your wish will be fulfilled and the person will be protected from illness and trouble.
The legend does not specify how long the effect will last. Yet people from all over the world are waiting in long lines for many hours, as evidence that the magic of the healing stone remains and will last for a long time to come.
